Handicraft History | Ancient Designs | Indian Textiles | Rigvedic | Sculptures

Sculptures are basically three-dimensional, human-made items preferred for unique appreciation as basic forms of art. Individuals who are engaged in this profession are known as sculptors.

Amongst all India certainly stands out and is truly considered to be a store house of sculptural art. Stone craft holds great importance in India and along with that has also been in existence since a while now.

The basic reason of building sculpture is so that there is some sort of art that can remain permanent for however long as they possibly can. Most of the sculptures in the olden times were created out of sturdy, long lasting and reasonably pricey supplies.

It used to frequently be bronze and stone like marble, porphyry, limestone, and granite. Sometimes even valuable and expensive metals such as such as gold, silver, jade, and ivory were also made to use for chryselephantine works.

However artisans and craftsmen preferred using materials such as woods particularly oak, box and lime, terra cotta and other ceramics and cast metals such as pewter and spelter as they were easily available, and were comparatively cheaper.

Some of the sculptures in the olden times used to be huge and wide and the former materials increased the cost to a greater extent.

Ice and sand sculpture are some of the sculptures that are quite short lived as compared to the other sculptures.

Indian sculptures prospered especially during the 3rd century BC and this was around the prevalence of the Buddhist religion, the Mauryan emperor and Ashoka, who had held on to this religion.

The Buddhist statues, displayed a calm and peaceful Buddha, with a shining exterior.

They were considered to be so inspirational for the reason that not only was it one of the most perfect pieces of art but along with that a great deal of excellent craftsmanship was also put in by a lot of skilled artisans and craftsmen.
