Gems are very similar to mineral and crystals or organic materials that have been cut and polished into attractive items by dexterous craftsmen.

Gems are the kind of minerals that are naturally formed in solid and inorganic chemical compounds that are most commonly found in rocks.

Each mineral has stipulated chemical composition and regular atomic structure that is responsible and provides the required hardness and color it possesses. Numerous natural crystals are eye-catching enough to be displayed.

On the other hand, there are several crystals that are faceted and polished in order to enhance their appearance.

There are some gems that are referred to as organics, come from plants and animals. These gems mainly comprise ivory, amber and pearl. There is a particular grouping of gemstones that known as synthetics.

These are not basically from any natural origin and are produced in the laboratories. Most of these artificial gems are cut in such a way so that they bear a resemblance to the real ones.

They consist of the same physical properties and chemical composition that are possessed by the natural gemstones.

Gemstones are, in general, measured by their weight in carats. The most precious attribute of gem is the color. Colorful gems like emeralds, rubies and sapphires are exorbitant.

Diamonds are colorless yet so beautifully made and are such brilliant piece of art that encompass skillful forms of cutting along with the elegance.

White light is mainly made up of attractive arrangement of the spectrum of colors.

The physical properties of gems include their sturdiness and hardness, their specific gravity, and the way they break.

These properties mainly vary on the atomic structure and the chemical bonding of a particular gemstone.

Gems can crack in basically two ways, either by cleaving or fracture. Again the way they crack depends on the atomic structure of the stone.

Gemstones that usually cleave will smash along the planes of weak atomic bonding. Those that fracture will break along a surface which is in no way related to its atomic structure.
