Terra cotta is a waterproof ceramic and is
used to make vessels, water, waste water pipes and surface
embellishment in building construction.
Moreover, it is also used to refer to items that are made
out of this material and to its natural, brownish orange color.
Since centuries terra cotta has been used to make sculpture
and pottery, as well as bricks and roof shingles.
In prehistoric times, the first clay sculptures were dried
and baked in the sun as soon as it was given its shape.
It was then placed in the ashes of open hearths to harden, and
finally kilns were used, similar to those used for pottery in the
recent times.
However, it be classed as a ceramic material only
after firing to high temperature. |
