Stone carving has been a prehistoric times
activity where pieces of rough natural stone are shaped by
the controlled removal of stone.
Owing to the durability of the material, evidence can be
found that even the earliest societies engaged themselves
in some form of stone work.
Although, stone carving differs from stone excavation, in
that it is the act of shaping or incising the stone, whereas
quarrying is basically an activity of acquiring useful stone,
usually in blocks, from geological sources.
Ivory carving
refers to the ornamentation of ivory that is done by using
sharp cutting tools, either mechanically or manually.
Humans have ornamentally carved ivory since prehistoric times,
and much of the ancient work imparts information about the use of
tools during the carving's time period. Ivory is considered to be
one of the most superb and fine materials that feature the most
intricate designs carved on its surface. |
