A carpet is referred to as a loom-woven, or any compacted animal fibers, such as wool or fur, textile or synthetic fabric floor covering.

Traditionally even table and wall coverings were called as carpets, as it was uncommon to use them in European interiors until the 18th century. Individuals normally use the words “carpet “and “rug “interchangeably. However, a prominent distinction between the two is based on their sizes.

As a matter of fact, carpets are much larger than rugs and occupy more floor space comparatively. There are several types of carpets found around the world. One of the most popular out of them is the flat weave carpet which is created by interlocking threads.

The category of oriental flat woven carpets includes kilim, soumak, plain weave and tapestry weaves. The other popular type of carpet is a hooked carpet which is manually woven by pulling strips of cloth such as wool or cotton through the meshes of a sturdy and strong fabric.

Carpets come from all over the world but perhaps the most famous are Persian carpets, which are reputed for its durability, comfort and distinctive design patterns.

Most of these carpets are still imported and majority of them are from countries such as India, Pakistan and Nepal where more or less the same techniques are used to create them.

Embroidery carpets, unlike woven carpets, are not usually made on a loom. Their manufacturing pattern is quite traditional and relates to an application of stitches to a cloth base.

Embroidered carpets were usually made for women of royalty in their palaces.

Since they were like so much there has also been some commercial manufacturing of these carpets. The 19th century was the time when there was a boom in the production of carpets due to the introduction of steel needles; earlier needles were made of bone.

Carpets have now become more of a fashion accessory and are being abundantly used to decorate homes. In some of the countries it is customarily that people sit on the floor. Carpets are efficiently an important but miniscule part of the floor covering popularly used in India.
